Alternative vacation ideas if we need to cancel our current plans at the last minute?
[Let me first say that I am generally an optimistic person, and I believe (and hope) that this swine flu will not be as bad as many are fearing.]
My family and I will be taking an 11 day tour of Central Europe, and our vacation starts in less than 3 weeks.
Let’s suppose we have to cancel the trip because of the impact of the swine flu (i.e. tour is cancelled, flights are cancelled, or we are advised not to travel to Europe).
Let’s also suppose that my family does not have the option of rescheduling this tour for sometime later this summer.
If we have to cancel, my thought is that my family should still take a vacation together somewhere in the US during the time we were supposed to be in Europe, even if it’s a relatively short vacation (4-5 days, instead of 11).
Any ideas on where we could go for a few days? Here are a few notes…
1. Purchasing a new flight at the last minute would probably be too expensive, so it should be a reasonable car drive from Southern California.
2. Everyone on the trip will be adults. Age range will be 27 to 71.

If you live in Southern California, you’re living in a vacation itself. Take a road trip to all the great beaches.
Or, drive up to Washington state, there’s a lot to do there.
Or go to Vegas!

why would you cancel your vacation to Europe?? There are many more infected people in the USA since it is MUCH closer to Mexico than in Europe! I think in Europe it would be safer for you actually since it is farther than the US from Mexico and much less people travel from Mexico to Europe than Mexico to southern California!
Edit: Check out this site:
It lists reports of swine flu problems by nation. Mexico is obviously #1 followed by the USA with over 700 cases of swine flu which outnumbers the third country by more than 500. (China with 200 some cases of swine flu). Germany, which is in central Europe has 36 cases in comparison to the USA’s 700 some. Obviously, it is safer there!
