ive always heard the earlier the better, i know companies like airbus sell a certain amont of tickets at a certain price and once the number of tickets are sold at one price level they go up to the next price level

Actually, they get more expensive. If you want them cheap you should purchase them like 2 months earlier. The earlier, the cheaper the ticket.

No, they are more expensive. And travel websites, in general, don’t get you much of a discount. I’ve found that, of the plane tickets I’ve purchased, every time, the airline has been cheaper than using a service such as a travel website (they have to make a buck, after all, and that means that they are a middle man).
Generally, 2-3 weeks is the best time to get a ticket because airlines scramble to fill the empty seats on their flights, so they slash ticket prices. So look at tickets 14-21 days before your flight, and that may just get you the discount that you’re looking for.
You might even be able to purchase travel miles from places like Craigslist… I’d look around if I were you.
