I’m new at traveling and I need a last minute room this Friday! How?
Sarah asked:
I need a room for 2 adults and one 4 year old this Friday in Eau Claire, WI, Stanley, WI would be better but anywhere in the area would be cool. This is so short notice and everyone seems to be booked. Should I drive around the city and find a spot? Hotels.com seems to charge for 2 days (Fri and Sat) when I only want to spend Friday night there. It would say room at $60 a night and you go to book it and it’s $120! Do they charge per person or something? Is there a way to do this?

She doesn’t have internet and I don’t have a credit card so would it be practical to go to the city and find a place, does anyone even do that anymore? Or shuld I call? What is the easiest way to do this?
This is my first time traveling without my parents, even though I’m 21 now, and I have no clue where to start! Thanks
Do websites say a place is booked and it’s really not booked?

Try orbitz.com and expedia.com. I have real good luck with them

First call the local chamber of commerce. Chain hotels do not always show real availability online. Also, traveling with children supports the theory of a suite hotel or bed and breakfast where you have the use of basic fridge and cooking. They are out there if you are willing to make a few phone calls. Call locally!! Good luck and remember, an unbooked or cancelled room is lost revenue, they will negotioate if it isn’t booked.

If you don’t have a credit card, I would call ahead of time to see, what their policy is and if they have a room. Some places will only hold a room if you have a credit card while others might hold it until a certain time for you, as long as you get there by that time, but I think calling ahead is a better plan. Can always get a list of hotels and details on them from triple A guides, Frommer or Mobile travel books from the library or a Barnes and Noble or similar bookstore, where they would have the most up to date travel guides.
