My wife travels 4-5 days a month, and gets paid 40K a year. Is that too little?
ambl311 asked:
Her company makes her travel last minute every month (last minute = 2-3 days notice). It is putting a hardship on me. She is in a supervisor role, yet only makes 40K a year. I think it is too little.
1. We live in Denver, the average 3 bedroom home is over 200K.
2. Hardship - Our daycare is right next to my wifes job, but clear accross town to mine.
3. Her job is starting to affect my job.
4. She is in the housing industry.
5. When she travels, it is to train people, give presentations in front of groups, etc.
6. Relax, not affecting the marriage.

Could be about right - but it all depends on the company she works for, her education, her position, so many things. Why is it a hardship on you?

Her appropriate pay rate is going to be based on a lot of factors. Does she have a college degree, and is it relevant to this position? What is her field and job title? How many years of experience does she have? You can’t just go on her having to travel often as grounds for more pay. A lot of people enjoy traveling for work, as long as the employer is footing the bill. If she’s unhappy, maybe it’s time for her to look for a different job.

There are many different reasons why she may be getting paid what she is. Just because someone travels 4-5 days a month does necessarily mean that they need to be earning 6 figures a year.
What I would look at is what her current role is, what industry is she in, where are you located, and what type of business is her employer (large private organization, public, small-business?). All of those factors decide what the salary rates are. I would also look at what her position requires in terms of education and where your wife is at education-wise. If she has a Master’s degree or some other graduate degree and she is not getting paid to what the market is for having the extra education, you may want to start contract negotiations. Look at what she would be making with another company in the same industry in the same role. Would she be making 20k more with another company?
The next question I have is what the hardship is that you are facing by having her gone 4-5 days in a month. Will the extra money help you financially to the point that you won’t care about the hardships, or will it just mask it for a little bit and come back up in a few months?
I travel 30-40 weeks per year and know how difficult it can be, but life is about compromise sometimes.

It truly depends on what the job actually is and what she is supervising. Even where you live determines how much you can expect to be paid. There are too many factors involved in pay scales to give you an accurate answer based on the information you have supplied. I think the more important issue is the strain it is putting on the marriage. Perhaps a job change would be in order. There are plenty of jobs from home that can reward diligence with far more than 40K per year! There are lots to choose from but my favorite is in the source box. Been through lots and finally found a winner! Please, save the marriage at all costs! We need some couples to prove that it can be done and that marriages aren’t just throw away contracts that are only kept when everything’s perfect.

40K a year is a lot of money to a lot of people. Where do you live. If you’re in NY or LA well ya that’s not enough. But if you are in an area where a 4 bedroom house cost $90,000 well then that’s a lot of money. So add your location and the answer will be a lot easier.
