Why would a guy travel and not tell you, but makes sure he talks to you before he leaves?

In my opinion, it’s either that he feels guilty for leaving you like that but he’s certainly not going to let you stop him from going. Or that he doesn’t like drawn out goodbyes, as it would make him feel homesick too soon..?
Of course, it could also be that he wants to see how much you miss and pine for him if he leaves suddenly like that. He makes it a point to see you because you mean something to him..Perhaps he wants you to cling on to him?
